I’ve stayed in small hotel rooms before, but my last stay at Moxy NYC Times Square was by far the smallest and yet it was the most stylish hotel room I’ve stayed in.
Moxy Hotel is part of SPG / Marriott Hotels and we purposely selected this hotel because it was the cheapest we could find in the area we wanted.
The hotel is strategically located in Midtown, walking distance to Broadway, Times Square, Bryant Park, Empire State Building and the shopping block on the 34th St.
Just like any other SPG/Marriott hotels, there was a dedicated reception for Elite members and they immediately identified my husband as a Platinum member and told us we have been upgraded to a room with 2 x Double Beds. Yay.

The Guest Room
In our mind, an upgrade usually means we are getting a bigger room, however when we entered our room for the first time we were surprised to see how small it was.
Both beds were filling up wall-to-wall and there was barely space to put our luggages flat on the floor.
Despite the shoebox room size, it was very delightful to see the layout and the little decor touches that was poured into the room. It screams a strong New York flavor of style and convenience. The use of space was successfully executed, there were drawers and closet spaces underneath the bed, clothes hangers and hooks along the wall, they even hung extra pillows along the wall that worked well as part of the decor too.
A USB power plug, bedside light with a tiny wall table was also placed conveniently by the bed.
The Lobby and Facilities

While the lobby is located right at the entrance, the lounge and common areas are located on the upper floor.
Moxy Main Guest Lounge
There is a hotel bar, restaurant (Legasea) and a great breakfast/lunch sandwich (Egghead), all within the vicinity of the hotel.

How to Book Using Points
Moxy NYC Times Square can easily be booked from Marriott website using cash or points.
Moxy NYC Times Square is a Category 5 hotel reward and it cost 35,000 points per night (or USD 250 – 350 if you’re paying cash).
However there are also a few other Moxy Hotel brands by Marriott across Manhattan that has a lower redemption rate such as the Moxy NYC Downtown that is a Category 4 Hotel Reward and it cost 25,000 points per night (or USD 166 – 200 with cash).
I collect SPG/Marriott points from staying in SPG/Marriott properties and from regular credit card usage of a co-branded card by American Express.
In Summary
Manhattan, New York has numerous hotels to choose from and most of them are quite pricey that sometimes you need to settle in a 3-star outdated shoebox room and you still have to pay an enormous amount of money.
Moxy brands across the world are considered the ‘budget’ / affordable hotel in the SPG/Marriott group but they have done a great job in positioning its brand and is still able to give an exceptional experience to their guests.
The design and guest experience in Moxy NYC Times Square was very well thought of up to the very detail of elevator buttons, closet space to room keys.
I would definitely go back and stay in this hotel if I were to travel alone or as a pair. But this is definitely not the type of hotel you would stay with kids.
