[Review] Following Barack Obama to Hotel Tentrem Yogyakarta

The hype of Hotel Tentrem Yogyakarta started when Barack Obama spent some nights here with his wife Michelle during their last visit to Indonesia. The raving reviews did not stop there, my friends and family who had been to Yogyakarta would vouch for this luxurious property in a heartbeat.

I was invited to speak at an event that took place at Hotel Tentrem and to my advantage was offered a complimentary one-night stay in this culture-rich town.

I was picked up by the hotel car service at the airport complete with my full name on a sign and chatted with the chaffeur as we were walking to the car. I knew immediately the warm hospitality of this city and hotel is going to be impressive.

The hotel was only about 20-25 minute drive from the Yogyakarta Adisucipto Airport and it didn’t feel long thanks to the driver who kept the conversation going throughout the ride.

Owned by Indonesia’s prominent pharma/herbal company Sido Muncul, the hotel atmosphere reflects a traditional Javanese feel through its’ grandeur of wooden pillars and a ‘bajaj’ replica placed right at the lobby entrance.

I arrived around 9.00AM and the reception managed to checked me in into a room within 20 minutes which I highly appreciated because not all hotels would normally do this (unless you are a top-tier member at hotel groups such as Marriott or Hyatt, etc) – note that Tentrem is not part of any hotel rewards program.

My room was a Standard Deluxe room and even this is already a very generous size room, I particularly liked the Super King Bed which I had all to myself.

I wasn’t very impressed with the bathroom, there was no bathtub but shower and toilet had its’ own ‘cubicle’. The worst thing was the toilet cubicle which I thought had a weird smell, if I stayed for an extra night I would have asked to switch rooms, but since it was only 1 short night I decided to just go with it.

As much as I wanted to try the hotel room service, I decided to go local and Go-Jek’ed myself some local gudeg which probably took 15-minutes from the time I clicked order on Go-Food app until the food goes into my belly (no joke).

The food costs me less than IDR 50,000 (USD 3) including the delivery to the hotel – This just proves how the hotel is located very close to the goodness of many local and affordable food.

A win for this 5-star hotel is the price – normal rate to stay in a Deluxe King Room is around IDR 1,000,000 (or USD 70) per night.

This rate goes head to head with the recently opened JW Marriott in Yogyakarta which I’ve been meaning to try.

This property has a full hotel facility from outdoor swimming pool, gym, spa to kids playground area – I didn’t have time to check out any of these.

I have to say that I love the Yogyakarta hospitality and consistent service throughout my stay. I’d get greeted every time I would walk past a hotel staff – staff courtesy training well done I must add. With customer service, every small things matter.

I’d definitely come back here again.
